Daily English Dictation 3

pre day answer

Jerry, what time do you have? I have 5 o'clock.

words

OK. Dictation No.2. Was it easy for you?

Well, George had the first line, George from Seinfeld, and he says "Jerry, what time do you have?". And then Jerry responded, "I have five o'clock".

So did you get it? That's great! Great. Now a lot of students, I know, do have some problems.

"What time do you have". "what time" now we got two sounds, sound the same. Then, we connect the sound and we only we keep the second one.

What time? No. "Wha time do you have?", "Do you" the faster we say it, the /u/ gets shorter. "dea"

"have" and this word "have" (what time do you have && I have five o'clock). There is a pronunciation rule. I call it the "7 Hs".

And the words are "he, her, him, his, had, has" and "have". Now these words are very common in daily English. And a lot of native speakers, especially Americans, when we say it fast, when we speak quickly, we can't hear the /h/ sound. OK, the /h/ is cancelled. It's a cancellation.

So, "do you have", if we say it fast, "dea v", "Jerry, what time dea have?"

When we say it slow, "Jerry, what time do you have?". And Jerry says "I have five o'clock". And if we say it quickly once again. We can get rid of the "h" sound. "I av five o'clock". And there is another link.

We have a /v/ sound here and "five", it's a /f/ sound, right? So, we have the similar sounds, we connect the sound, and only keep this one. Just like "what time", no, "wha time".

Now, the key, everybody, when you're speaking English, say it like a human.

"what time do you have?". That's OK. or you can look your watch. Ohhh, My watch is not wor(king). "what time do you have?".

And you gotta check your watch, ohhh, you check your phone, and check your watch. "I a five o'clock".

Do you have five o'clock? That was today's dictation, yesterday's dictation. and today we have a brand new one. It's one sentence, it's not too difficult. Are you familiar with Snoopy? Or Charlie Brown. Well Charlie Brown has a friend and his name is "Linus".

Linus is the character with the blanket. Linus has something good to say. You listen and do the dictation.

And I'll give you the answer tomorrow. Thanks a lot.

pronunciation

 1. 当两个音前后一致时,省略前一个,保留后一个。例:"what time" --> "wha time".
 2. 当说得很快的时候,7 个 "h" 音会被忽略。例:"he, her, him, his, had ,has, have" --> "e, er, im, is, ad, as, ave".
 3. "have five" 中 "h" 音被省略,"ve" 与 "five" 的音重复了,省略前一个,直接说成 "a five"。"I a five o'clock".
